Extra (credit) Extra (Dr BLTunes): Read all about it!
Good day, to all of my great, critical and creatively-minded students, and to other blog participants. To celebrate this "autumn" day in which my cast will be cut off and "castaway," I'm giving away copies of Autumn's Castaway, a special arrangement of an original Dr BLT song, recorded by a former then Chapman U student of mine, Edwin Huaco, aka DJ EJ. And though the title corresponds to the theme of this being the big day, when my broken wrist will be able to breathe again, the song is about rejection, abandonment, and rage----themes that seamlessly correspond, and are directly relevant to, personality theories and counseling. That makes them grist for the mill of student PsychMusicVidz producers-in-training. Along, with Autumn's Castaway, I will now also provide additional extra Dr BLTunes for students still needing that certain song as the raw audio materials for their PsychMusicVid. Lyrics to these, and other songs requested to be presented in lyrical form will be added in a separate post. Now, here are those links:

Dear Readers,
The mind of adult cognitive and behavior is just an example how the children and teens differ. And when children and teens present their problems in therapy, it is stated unlike the adult’s therapy. Children and teens are unable to match the maturity of an adult. Therefore, therapy for children and teens should match their ability to comprehend their world.
Children and teen’s understanding of self is centered on their entire self, whereas the adult cognitive and behavioral is centered on the family and self within the family. In the treatment therapy of children and teens cannot have the same methods of treatment as the adult therapy. First, children and teens intellectual understanding of the world is unlike the adult intellectual understanding of the world, and therefore therapy must be altered so that children and teen’s intellectual understanding of their world is taken in to consideration. Further, the adaptation of therapy method should include the freedom to express emotional behavior, in terms of allowing the children and teens to talk openly without fear of adult reprisals. Since children and teens should have some sort of structure presented to them by their parents, they should be given the opportunity to let down their guard.
The environment of the therapy session should be warm and comfortable rather than white and sterile. Also the therapist and counselor should make every effect to convey to the children and teens in no uncertain terms, unless there are ethical issues presented such as red flags of suicide ideations and attempts, what is said in therapy session and between the therapist and their clients remain confidential and within the therapeutic office. They should be given the opportunity to choose which type of intervention that best fits their presented problem(s), and this can be accomplished through discussion between the therapist or counselor and the client (patient). Children and teens should be given the opportunity to excuse themselves from the therapeutic sessions if they are uncomfortable for whatever reasons, but chooses to return when they feel comfortable to do so. Therapy for children and teens should be centered on them and the therapist or counselors need to inform of this. Lastly, children and teens need to hear from therapists and counselors their emotions and words are being heard and empathized.

I liked both songs; the tone and beat of 16 reminded me of an 80's ska band, and Shrink Rapped reminded me of sublime.Very cool! Anyhow, 16 is about all the pressures (i.e. parental, school, peer etc) teenagers go through in life. Unfortunately, sometimes theses pressures cause unhealthy amounts of stress which in-turn can lead to depression and thoughts of suicide. I believe communication and prevention is key, which means both the parents and the school need to be hyper vigilant with the kids. Keeping an open eye for warning signs of depression (isolation, poor, grades, anger etc).
Shrink Rapped is great because it introduces a cool, fun, non threatening side to therapy. Theres a definite stigma to seeing a Psychiatrist or Psychologist - you must be CRAZY, or you can't handle life! None could be more true. This kinda of stigma is quite harmful because it prevents people from seeking out help they need. Regardless of the level of help one needs, stigmas do nothing but prevent you from living your life to its utmost potential. If you had a physical problem, like a broken arm, you would seek medical attention, so don't hold back if you think you need to talk with therapist.

The question of how to get teenagers/adolescents to engage in therapy is a good one and one I am living right now. I think it is imperative that teenagers feel like they are being heard and truly listened to. My experience has shown me that when the therapist doesn't make eye contact and hides behind a computer it is harder for the teen to truly trust them. Teenagers know when someone is really interested in them and what they have to say. Therapists can't fool them. Teenagers have a sense of who is listening to them and who is just going through the motions. They need to really engage the teens and not maintain such distance which I think is what they have been trained to do. Therapists need to be real with teenagers....not many people are like that in this day and age.

I really liked your song "Sixteen" because although it is a sad message, nevertheless it is a clear message to all. It is truly telling them the types of pressures teenagers encounter day by day and how they feel as though they need and are "suppose to fit in" for everything, whether it is sports, school, looks, and being what they call "cool." I believe parents and any adult that may work for school systems should create programs or workshops to make teenagers realize there is no such thing as perfect. Also, to create programs that help teenagers seek confidence with themselves, step by step and hopefully be used as a stepping stone to create some sort of self-actualization within the teenager. This would help make new types of solutions and more positive ways to deal with their issues rather then their suicide thoughts and actions.

The "Shrink Rapped" showed a great comfort for people and young children/teenagers to come forth to psychatrist if needed or to go into therapy. Usually in our culture today the thought of going into therapy means that you have deep issues where you are seen as insane. Ways to strive our culture away from that tye of thinking is creating workshops with our children to say "it's okay and healthy to speak to a therapist." Parents and adults need to realize that therapy works just as good as medication if applied correctly. Also, there should be a better sent out message through media rather then the typical crazy person whom goes to see therapist. Media has also become the reason for stereotypes of therapy or to see psychiatrist. In order to help change that is to create messages that are commercialized and put out through our televisions and magaizines that it is absolutely normal and okay to seek for help and that it is not healthy to supress emotions. People need to be informed that in order to become one with themselves they need to understand the process.

even at the age of 20 i can directly relate to the lyrics of this song. I tend to forget to focus on the now and to enjoy myself to my fullest because of the long road i see ahead to my success. Regardless, great song Dr!
