Movie: "The Experiment" + Extra Credit Opportunities Abound
You just saw the movie, THE EXPERIMENT. You were never presented with an hypothesis corresponding to "THE EXPERIMENT," but I'd like you to use your imagination to suggest to you what the designers of the social experiment in the movie, THE EXPERIMENT may have had in mind concerning such a hypothesis. You don't need to record you hypothesis here, but please come to the next class prepared to offer it at that time.
Now for an update on Extra Credit Opportunities.
Santa's been checking his list to find out who has been naughty and who has been nice. You're all nice, but some of you are slipping behind in your blackboard homework just a little, so I'm bringing in some extra credit as an early Christmas gift incentive to keep up with your workload.
There are several, I repeat, several, ways to earn extra credit in this course, but to be eligible, you must not be more than one week behind in your blackboard assignments.
That wasn't the case for the first extra credit project, a Halloween-themed assignment, and even if you haven't yet taken advantage of that offer, I'm extending it to you, right here, right now, once again.
EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT I: Halloween with Jim Beam
In the comments section below, please tell us what the most frightening or daunting aspect of scientific writing and what positive steps you plan to take in order to overcome your fear.
Just for that, you get 5 extra credit points and a copy of my original song addressing the issue of alcoholism as a means by which distressed individuals self-medicate.
sample the song here:

EXTRA CREDIT Assignment 2
Part I: Listen to the movie, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. For 5 EC points, introduce 2 scientific hypotheses that came to you while watching the movie.
Part II: request a free mp3 copy of THANKSGIVING IN TURKEY, by me, Dr BLT.
drblt@drblt.net
Listen to the song, and then answer this: Pretend that the Turkish Board of Prison Terms has agreed to release the main character in this song (story), under one condition---that he is able to name just one piece of interesting research put out by an American or a group of Americans. In your opinion, what would that one piece of interesting research be? Share your selection with him in the comments section, and, help him get out of prison.

EXTRA CREDIT #3 (worth 5 points EC)
Finally, listen to the song, and then, in paragraph form in the comments section, list everything contained in this musical "recipe" that would lead to the construction of good scientific paper.

Sometimes the scariest part of writing is just getting started, or the fear that you may never get started because there is nothing in your head worth expressing through the written word. Perhaps though, at the core of these other fears, is the fear of appearing inadequate, or inferior by comparison to ones peers. Through my own achievements in school, and with writing, I have learned to overcome many of the type fears I have just mentioned, but in a way I have developed some new fears by way of praise from my peers, and instructors, in that I now feel a greater need to excel in my writing and live up to the praise that I have received, as well as confirming to myself that I ever deserved that praise. Although, in hindsight I see that it was the sincere praise and encouragement I received from my fellow students, and certain influential instructors that helped me to develop the confidence I now have as a writer.

Midnight Expression
It was unnecessary for me to watch the film Midnight Express again in order to draw some hypotheses from its plot. I believe I was about ten or eleven years old when I saw the film in the theater, and I have seen it since many times via cable, DVD, etc. In my opinion, it is one of those films you can watch several times and still be enthralled as well as entertained. Perhaps it is the combination of great film making (production, acting, sets, etc.) and a fascinating, edge of your seat, true story that makes Midnight Express a film that is entertaining after more than one viewing. Also, although I am a fan of the film Midnight Express, it seems inappropriate for underage viewers, because of the violence, and sexual content depicted through out the film.
