Brandman student forum: Overcoming fears of being chopped up in the Blended courses (blender)
Good morning, Brandman students! It was a great pleasure to meet all of you that I've worked with prior to Psych 511, and a great pleasure to meet all of you that I've never met before.
I want to commend all of you for being so brave as to embark upon this journey of the blended courses model of instruction. This week, I'm going to grade you strictly on participation.
Don't worry. Blackboard cannot hurt you. Online blended content will not bite you, and you won't break anything by participating. To encourage a high level of participation, I'll be grading on a curve for the first couple of weeks, giving you the benefit of the doubt for responses which may be lacking in sophistocation. Furthermore, the first five to respond to the discussion and online assignments in Blackboard will receive a free mp3 copy of my brand new song, "A Matter of Time (Before I Lose My Mind)" which relates to the inner turmoil one often faces in the struggle between control and affiliation. Sometimes letting go of the need to control people and circumstances makes us feel like the main character in this song: "it's a matter of time before I lose my mind."

Ok, here goes....
It was nice meeting you last evening. Right now, anxiety is high, but I will keep my head up! This is my first semester at Brandman, and have to say the blackboard is excessive. We will learn more if we are not buried by busy work. It's a short 8 weeks, I'd rather focus on the essentials. I am confident that my classmates, which all seem like some good people, will be able to help me acclimatize in this crazy new environment.
The Cake video came with the CD for Comfort Eagle... I thought you looked familiar.

Blended... or just in the blender? We live in a society where the only constant in change itself. I liked the song about to lose my mind...
What happens when it's already lost and how do you get it back???? Or is the mind better served residing in a different place?The more one try’s to get a handle on life the faster it seems to slip away. So it seems the speed on the blender can be the determinate of rather we get mixed in or with the contents that are included within the bowl that we find ourselves in. Working together we can all come out as a beautiful concoction.Just as a side not I am flexible but, prefer the one on one in the classroom interactions.

I will group my reactions to the Blackboard system into two categories. One category is made up of features that seem, potentially, more positive versus the other category which is comprised of items that seem “less than positive” if not actually wrong! Two negative features are that we were given an inaccurate description about the amount of time which would be required to complete the given tasks in an acceptable fashion, and there were not any comprehensive operational instructions. As with so many things in life, we were largely left to our own devices. To a certain extent, being left to our own initiative compels creative problem solving and leads somewhat towards one of the more positive, potential features.
Such a positive feature, which was mentioned in the introductory basic Blackboard video, is that use of tools such as those we have to master in Blackboard are supposedly vital in today’s work force. Another positive feature, one with which I am already personally experienced () is that the helpdesk does actually help.
So, all in all, as with so much of our living experiences, Blackboard is a mixed bag, some good, some o.k. and some ... not so o.k. Hopefully, with increased experience, using the system will be transformed into a comprehensively positive interaction.

I don't feel so brave embarking upon this journey. I feel stuck. Like being on the 405 in rush hour. You gotta get home (the MA degree) and there's not much you can do about the traffic (Brandman, hybrid classes) especially because you know there are few better or alternative routes (cost, location, time). So you deal with it the best you can. In situations like this I tell my husband to say the Serenity Prayer. But I'm better at prescribing than taking medicine. Like Mike Chester wrote, I prefer to focus on the essentials. I'm really not interested in Dr. Deulens? biography. He doesn't exist for me. I wouldn't like teaching a class that someone else designed & dictates exactly how to do it. I think I or most competent adults could facilitate this course as it is without any further training. It doesn't appear to require an MFT, LCSW or PhD instructor. I resent that because it's not what I came here for. I imagine you/Dr. BLT feel kinda stuck, too; like being on a rough path to some metaphorical home that you want to get to. So if there is a queen of Caltrans or a So Cal traffic fairy this is my wish: What I'd like to get from this is for you to impart some of what you know about the journey and the destination (becoming and being a therapist), what you do on your path (job), what roads you took to get there (education), which roads you recommend (theorists/theories), which roads one must take because you wouldn't want to miss out on the view even if you'll never live there (the necessary basics) and which roads to stay away from,the ones with potholes and pitfalls (from your knowledge and experience) and what you think of the roads that got you and your passengers there(your opinions on human nature, recipes for healing emotional wounds, broken minds and hearts). In essence, would you please let us take a look at your map. Oh, and I almost forgot; could you also tell us some stuff about psychological assessment, instruments, etc. On our way, I/we will study the map, use it as a guidepost, figure out(research, practice)alternative routes and then find our own way of going.
I just noticed. Sigh. Stretch. I feel calmer for just having written this. Thank you.

In listening to the song, “A Matter of Time (Before I Lose My Mind)”, I was thinking of the comparison between “traditional” Brandman courses –vs- Blended Brandman.
“Good times and memories”…of Traditional courses.
“Lost all the good times we had, all the memories shared”…of Traditional courses.
“Lost all my sparkle and shine when (Brandman) walked out that door”….of the Traditional classroom
“Lost all the sweet things you said when I knew you still cared”…..(in the days before I officially enrolled at Brandman)

The mind boggling part about this new hybrid program is that the class sites are not logical or user friendly and you have to go thru layers and layers of stuff to find what you're looking for, that is, if you know that what you're looking for is there somewhere, AND, if you know what you're looking for. (The Learning Styles Test that we are assigned to take online is not there.) For those of us taking 2 classes it's especially irritating that the two class sites are not set up the same way. When you click on a "button" in the maroon menu for one class, you may not bring up the same items or choices on the other class site.
In an email exchange on the topic one of our classmates said this:
"I’ve never seen such a confusing site! So many assignments are “hidden” and tucked away in such obscure places, that even when I’ve “discovered” one, later on, I have to spend a LOT of time trying to find it again! (Didn’t April say that the Blended assignments were so “easy to keep track of because they’re all in one place”?? Right!)" WRONG!(my word). She continues, "Also, there’s no continuity! BLT’s assignment page" ( which is actually Dr. Deulen's page), "looks completely different from Gloria’s!"(*our other instructor) – "where there’s hidden assignments in other areas." In Gloria's class we are required to post an answer to the Discussion Board question AND
"respond to at least 3 other (student's) posts. That would require being tied to a computer 24/7! No more sense of “completion” when an assignment is turned in the “traditional” way – it’s never ending!!!
I refuse to lose my mind, but this gives me headaches.

I'm not too stressed about the Blackboard format since as a Librarian I have used it quite extensively. That said, this is my first session in my foray into the MA in Psych and it has been a few years since my last grad school stint, and I am anxious about getting back into the groove of being a student. But I have signed on for the ride and and I am excited about my new path.

Thanks, all of you, for you highly valued feedback. I'm in this same journey with all of you. I share many of your sentiments. The one thing I can tell you that I was told at the staff meeting designed to orient me to this blended approach is that that course as it appears in blackboard is just a template. Once I figure out how to tamper with it, I will, and I will change whatever I can to make things less of a burden for all of you.

I feel like an ADHD kid with a really dirty bedroom. I need to make a pile and take care of one thing at a time. I am not usually overwhelmed, but I feel a little out of control at the moment. Sure hope it's temporary.

I think i wrote this on the wrong one. :/ But i feel that same as everyone else. I think it is just a bunch of busy work and that is why i started to take and LOVED chapman/brandman classes is because they did not give busy work. I don't think it is absolutely horrible it is just time consuming and we need to stay up on it all. I would rather classes go back to how they used to!

This has been an interesting week for me since we all last met. My mother has been in the hospital since Wednesday and I have spent all my time tending to her and neglecting my school duties, so please excuse me if all my posts everywhere are not up to par.
That being said, obviously me and blackboard, wiki, this blog, and whatever else have not had much time to interact. I have interacted with blackboard before and we get along pretty well for the most part, but have had some fights. I really would have preferred that we were given the option of whether we wanted blended or non-blended classes just like we are given the option of whether or not we want to take online classes. With the classes in this format it seems like the teachers have no control over what we do sometimes making it seem like they don't know what's going on. With the blended format it also seems like students are required to do more work than they would have if it wasn't blended, making it difficult for working adults to keep up with everything like this program is supposedly designed to allow them to do. The only pro of having a blended class like this is that students are able to communicate with one another more easily.

I'll try to make this as painless as possible for all of you. We'll discuss this further this evening. I'm committed to delivering a course to you that is interesting, reasonable, and beneficial. We'll use this as a template, but I will exercise discretion in terms of what parts of this is worthwhile exploring and what parts are not as relevant, and don't require as much attention. In other words, I'm going to try to streamline the process.

This week has been confusing, stressful this week unable to post an assignment in my other class. I had to call and email my instructor many times. In the blended class I loose out on my instructors knowledge and classroom relationship. I am willing to give the blended class a try.

Nothing wrong with a small online component but this blackboard is way too much online stuff too soon. I feel like they totally are jumping the gun on this , and I desperately miss the old way of human discussions and interactions. Its just crap. We are in a field where human interactions are crucial to being good at what we do, how could going mostly online be of any benefit to us students? I am feeling the frustration.
