If John Lennon were alive, he'd be singing, "All we are saying is give PSYU 501 a chance"

There are plenty of typical, conventional, dare I say "boring" counseling classes out there?!  PSYU 501, offered for graduate students attending Chapman University at the College of the Canyons campus in beautiful Santa Clarita, is anything but boring.  The class involves an innovative, interactive approach that's bound to bring out the best critical and creative thinker in you that you can possibly be, while greatly adding to your fund of knowledge and skill in the field of counseling.  It will be offered as a 9-week-once-per-week course that begins August 4, 2009.  It will be held Tuesdays from 5:30-10 pm.

It is actually a professionally supervised experience in counseling and related activities.  Experience also includes correlated reading, workshops, lecture, and group activities.

By the end of the course the student should be able to . . .

1. Demonstrate knowledge of  basic stages of counseling and major components of each, including intake interviewing and assessment, building rapport, use of basic counseling skills, and transfer and termination;

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic components of progress case notes, in preparation for the skill of psychological report writing;

3. Discuss a beginning choice of therapy model that fits their personal philosophy of counseling;

4. Critically evaluate their own counseling skill strengths and weaknesses, both verbally in a group of their peers, and in writing;

5.  Critically evaluate their colleagues' counseling styles and abilities and provide feedback in helpful ways in a  peer group setting;

6. Discuss two or three of their own personal issues that may impede the therapist/client relationship or create countertransference.

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the following...

1. Stages of counseling
2. Intake interviewing and assessment
3. Basic counseling skills
4. Suicide and other crisis intervention
5. Transfer and termination issues
6. Self-evaluation of the therapist

You will leave the course better equipped to serve prospective clients, and to use the counseling process to help clients mobilize internal and external resources in order to resolve complex problems and deal with their lives more effectively.  I not only bring to the table years of experience in teaching and in providing therapy to a wide variety of client populations as a clinical psychologist, but, with your help, I will also bring the course to life, by seamlessly integrating music, and the arts into the course content in a manner that makes it fun, interesting and engaging.
